The whole thing should be moved to plugin instead.
Also, I dont think its a good idea to display "Who's online" box here, for guests.

thoughts?

Well, I don't think it really should be a problem. But I can easily fix that if you want.

Just remove the names showing in index, and make the url http://www.cotonti.com/plug.php?e=whosonline available only for members

who is online plugin, or as you call it, standard online thing, is also used for anti hammer protection and much more.

I believe, core implementions basics are these:

-If there is no way making it an outsider,
-Or, like, if the plugin is so popular and making it plugin is a pain in the ass, it is in the core.

Who's online is both, no need to play with this feature, I vote it to be stay as the way it is.
