So far I'm getting convinced that despite XML and HTML sitemaps share a lot of data, the way the output is generated is very different. And HTML sitemaps are very different depending on site needs. E.g. a site consisting of just 50 items can be visualized as a simple tree, while a site with 500,000 items can't fit in any tree and you are likely to show only category structure for it.
