So, now Subforums are available out of the box and we are going to review recent items plugin as well. So we need to decide what types of display is needed. I'll give you a few examples:
1. Standard: category / root section / topic  2. Just topics  3. With subforums: category / root section / sub section / topic  4. Parent-only: parent section / topic  May the Source be with you!

Right. Basically to stick the sprintf bit into the config and have the admin decide on what to use.
