Extrafields allow you to add additional database columns to various areas, including pages, users and categories. For categories this can be useful if for example you want to add a file to the category, or an additional textfield, or maybe some other parameters. Basically extrafields is there to add a great amount of flexibility without having to hack into the system or write a plugin.
