now that iam aware of the autocheck i pull back my idea.
seems more logic to let it in the root. otherwise i would suggest my old idea.

Yeah, this isn't a good idea. As Sergeich said, it's a symbol of your site, not a skin file. A company's not going to change their logo for every skin, they're going to keep the same logo, just change the looks of the template.

-1 to this idea, you can do that by yourself, not commit to the whole CMS. A myriad of browsers automatically check for favicon.ico on the root of the domain, which would result in hundreds of 404 errors daily even on the sites that noone visits.

favicon.ico a unique identifier of the site. This is not identifier of the skin. I do not agree with this idea.

when iam developing skins or plugins for sed i needed to change the favicon every time.
so my idea was why not sticking the favicon in the skin folder.
i think its a bit more logic to have it at the "visual-things" so you do not have to change dirs and you won't forget to change it in the process´;)
also you could change the favicon simply by changing the skin.

isnt the favicon part of the the ci/cd/skin you wish to create?
so why not putting it simply in that folder...
would put more order in the root dir too btw.

just an idea...
