Anyone else having issues with javascript on this website? lot of things not working right lol... Also, personal file space for me still seems to be inaccessable. So I'll have to use rapidshare yet again.

This release is a pretty substantial update, from corehack to plugin, operates more effective and does not increase page size by any amount when not in use. In use, it add's a single forms size.

The only needed change is removing a few options from a div tag. For whatever reason being present, they don't allow the form to operate(even if set to false instead of true).. Info on that in the ReadME. Other than that its Plug and Play. No extra hooks in the skin files needed.

Here it is, still not AJAX, but it's a Plug-In now... :D

Alright guys, It just felt harsh hearing all the "bad" being posted lol, I am more than willing to learn how to build it the right way. Had I not posted it up here, I wouldnt know how poorly it was actually built(though I still think working=a good start).. heh

I'm working on building another variant, this time plugin style so noone has to be worried about compatibility. I'll do my best to get it into AJAX style code.. I have it working now using the following method:

Text converts to Textboxer on click, added a div tag around the {FORUMS_POSTS_ROW} hook to do this on only the selected post and not all of them(same reason I hid them originally).

I definately should have put more thought into how I made it operate, but I wanted to get it out there so everyone knew it was being done and could be marked off any lists of things to do.. :)

So I guess now I just need to convert it to AJAX.

esclkm,
Don't gotta remake it bro :P help me remake it using AJAX in the chat later... LOL

Your right, it does cause forum and comment pages to double in size. However, if someone is showing that many posts per page, that a user notices the difference, the number of posts/comments per page should be reduced.

I had already thought about this and decided it wouldn't be a big enough issue to be concerned with.

It really seems to me, that rather than making useful suggestions and postive comments towards helping me use better implementation, you guys want to ride your high horses around like you started out your coding career/hobby knowing the best way to do everything.

Give me some slack here and help me improve it, not bash me for the methods I used accompolished my goal. A week ago, I couldnt have written a single function in PHP, and here I am today, trying to understand the far more ocmplex methods being suggested(and not very clearly at that).
So bad variation - in this method size of forum page will grow in 1.5 - 2.

You should install it and see how it works. You don't actually see those edit forms for any message until you click "Edit". The form is hidden using <div> tags and jscript. Which reminds me that I totally forgot to include the stupid header.tpl which allows them to unhide. Yikes. I'll upload a new release that includes it in just a little while.

Until Then the code for the header.tpl is:

<head>
	<script language="javascript">
		$(document).ready(function(){

		    $(".edit").click(function () {
		    var divname= this.name;
		      $("#"+divname).show();
		    });
		$(".cancel").click(function () {
		    var divname= this.name;
		      $("#"+divname).hide();
		    });
		  });
	</script>
</head>

What plugins are already converted, and using the editpost hook? I'll kindly update them for support as mentioned in the readme.

I would love for it to operate using AJAX, but I not a professional webdesigner, and lack the needed skills to make it happen this way at the present momment.

I agree that this shouldn't require corehacking, it should have been implemented into the core already and removed the need for the standard editing method of switching to a new page. I can revert it back to a plugin and make it keep working as it does I'm sure, but I really thought it better to be in the core(so that it could be released in future cotonti releases, and work towards removing the typical editing method since its 1990 status.

What I meant was what Trustmaster said, otherwise, the idea is nice.

@Dayver: If you want to use AJAX, you can write plugins, or even modules for later. But core should never ever be written AJAX.

It is like we solved everything in our list and this is the last thing to do, well it is not at all. And talking about it, if you just check admin/banlist you can see how bad is ajax operations are performed, but even if it was an excellent use, I would say no. We have bugs to fix and tasks to be completed, if anyone wants to do something, admin panel hardcoded to tpl files is a very busying task.

And about publics common opinion, I can't change what I think because of what everyone thinks, which happens to be wrong. I will never code core or basic module ajax. If anyone wants to catch up with new web tech, web 2.0 does not only mean ajax.

You want to add ajax everywhere, Trustmaster says 50/50. I believe it should be strict html. We have a lot of oppurtunities with PHP/MySQL, of course plugins like markItUp! must have JQuery, but other than that, core should be ajax-free.

And I was the one that pressed Trustmaster and everybody else to use Ajax at first. But now I see it was a big mistake, I just wonder how much time should pass that you realize that fact too, hopefully soon, because every new move is another mistake (index polls-i started that mistake, i accept i was wrong/administration enhancements/rating system...)

I'll be short:

It must be a plugin. Easy to do and no need to bloat the core.

I forgot to mention that this also adds a feature to mask the actual post number for each thread like the comments system does. So the first post in each thread is always displayed as '#1' instead of random numbers throughout as it normally does. The link it creates remains the same though so no other functions should be disturbed by this.

I'm uploading another BETA to the site, this time for the ColoredUsernames feature. It aswell as this is a corehack and currently replaces only a single file. I have yet to decide if these two features should be implemented together in the same package but I am leaning towards it to reduce time for updating to keep working with future cotoni releases.

Thread for it will be up shortly and contains both Cotonti 0.0.2 and Quick-Edit 0.0.1 compatible files so it can run with either.
Nice idea, bad application.

First, Cotonti will not support this, because the functions.php and forums.posts.inc.php is outdated. Then, you basically recall the post that has been called before, so actually you should be append a textboxer and fill it with the post, otherwise it is like opening a pop-up.

It's currently working using Cotonti build 0.0.2. :\

I assume what you mean by recalling the data is that I shouldn't run a query to call the data for the textboxer, but use the query already in the file to get the post text? This would be an easy fix if it's the problem. I'm just not really clear on what your saying the problem with it is. I'll gladly reshape it if you care to elaborate for me.

Hey guys, this marks my first post, hopefully a good one and not in the wrong area of the forums. I'd been working on building my forums using sedito 1.2.1 and since everyone kept telling me to, I finally jumped ship and came to Cotonti... :D

I'm still learning to code by the minute and trying to get back into the swing of things. I wanted to upload the first thing I implemented into my cotonti forums upon setting them up, a Quick Edit feature. This is NOT a plugin, but a Core HACK. I wasn't really sure where to put it, so this seemed a nice spot, move it if needed.. :)

As the thread description says it, users and administrators may now edit posts and comments without leaving the page it's on. Being that my forums are just getting setup and have very few SQL columns, I can not test it in full swing. I would really like to get some people to test it out for me in it's current state while I finish the rest of the code. All that's really left is finishing up allowing editing the topic title, description and tag cloud. The code for that is about 75% right now and will be included with the next release. Until then, you can click the [~] symbol to open the original editor for editing these items.

If you download this and try it, please leave feedback with your thoughts, be it good or bad. Thanks for reading, heres a screenshot and the download link. :D

//link removed, new release available.
