Maybe combine "Recent additions", "Recent forum posts" and "Recent comments" into "Recent updates" with Tabs for users to get the latest stuff quicker without scrolling down below all the news? Just an idea.
I suppose people are going to have more than 2 small posts as news on their index. At least 5 of them. Then the left column is going to contain a lot of general info, etc. Anyways it's all so site-specific. May the Source be with you!
