That way you describe it, it seems it's some kind of bug.
However, I corrected my brithdate on this site and it's ok... but I don't remember if it was before or after update :) A patch file looking for that specific birthdate (or maybe: empty birthdates) and converting it would be needed. But lets' wait what Cotonti developers have to say.
