Building a new pfs

# Kort : donP How many "self-made" plugins would a site like yours require to call this "bad waters"?

"Bad waters" was referred to the fact that Siena developement is actually slowly and nobody here still knows what changes he would make to his own job...

My Cotonti-based websites use 20-30 plugins, many of them are self-made, many others are old LDU/Seditio self-ported plugins (all of them are from coders that abandoned the CMS at the beginning of Seditio or Cotonti). All of them are very essential to the life of my websites and I worked a lot for making them functional already three times (LDU->Seditio->Cotonti)...
I think this is really enough for me as Coding is not my job and I haven't got much time to waste in my night hours (instead of resting).

There are currently 3 devs working on Siena. More will join after modularization is complete. The modularization has really been a blocker, because nothing is clear until the new structure works and everybody can use it to develop other parts.
May the Source be with you!

My intention wasn't to criticize Developers' work, absolutely!
I was only expressing my doubts about the effort creating plugins (in this particular case if new PFS would be a plugin instead of a core part) if the future API structure would change so soon...

Making plugins or modules for Genoa is still fine, because Genoa will be in use for a long time ahead and for Siena a conversion can be done later when it is out.
May the Source be with you!

We are making this replacement pfs as a plugin..
It is modular, so I hope with a few changes we can also use it for Siena.
And I hope everybody will like this otherwise it was a waste of our time.

We are finishing the specs right now and everything is starting to fall into place :) .
urlkiller has made a nice UI, and we both have a lot of simple but usefull ideas for
this plugin.

Coding it will be fun, and it will use the 'modern' techniques and that with a brand new UI....
It WILL be nice.

Excellent news, I for one am looking forward to see this plugin.
ATM we do not use FSM cause when I started the site in 2006 I was a complete noob with sites. As our site exploded in popularity I regreted not using is soon after up until today.
We have 26125 files in there and its getting a bit crowded (and PFS is not even allowed for normal members, only staff). And yes, just for easy overview and structured setup I would have liked to be using it.

Also having the ability of using subfolders inside the pfs would be a nice addition. It will just be an easy help to structure it more than just adding folder after folder (I have almost 450 folders and just navigating to a folder is a pain now and than).

Not sure if its actually possible but could you add the functionality to be able to change file names while they are inside the PFS? Right now you can edit a file and change its description and move it to a different folder. But being able to change its name IMHO would be just a nice addition as well.

he fox, back from holiday i see...
hmmm... the renaming file thing was not something we thought off, so good point.
We will add it to the list.

There is only 1 concern with this renaming a file option:
If used in pages or post, this link/thumb/image will die.
We will give a warning for that, but i will not write code to update pages and posts.

Yeah, I agree. That was not my intention. Its just that sometimes I upload files and come to the conclusion they have a file name i dont want. Now you have to delete them and re-upload. Being able to change them in the PFS would be great, thanks for considering such :)

Also, would it be possible to allow an admin to set how many files can be uploaded at once? Right now its 8, but maybe making it selectable with a mx of 15 or whatever? Maybe its maxed at 8 now to reduce stress to the server during upload while uploading "big" files, but i am sure you know that better than I do!

About the FSM conversion tool.... It just hit me. This will be not an easy tool to build.

I need to consider converting:

pages (html and the nonhtml fields, also the download fields)
posts (html and the nonhtml fields)
extrafields

user profile data even..?

pfff... Now I know why no one has got a working conversion script...
This thing is a complete project on its own :(

SH** what am I getting into... some help would be nice guys...

interessting! seems like one of the only discussions left here ;)

I need to discuss some details about the comments here with leo first before we can post a rough outline of the project.

Maybe we have already a solution by hand for the conversion/backwards compatibility issue.

We also talked about a clear name solution for renaming files or better, giving them a option to overwrite the original filename with a extra field so we could create the illusion to rename files...

We won't give up, right leo?

The project specs:

We have made a plan (sort of) for our project.

read it my_files0.3_494.pdf

well as always... everybody want to say something.. so read it, and give comments if you like.
Maybe we have forgotten stuff ??
